Special services
Specials services comprises a multi-disciplinary team of civil, structural and materials engineers. We have technical expertise in noise and vibration, material technology and corrosion, expert witnessing, applied research and development, developing bespoke software and advance structural analysis. This results in the graduate engineers and material scientists being involved in extremely varied projects, which is one of the highlights of working for special services. This is coupled with gaining regular client exposure and project management experience.
Since starting in 2006 I've worked on major London Underground projects – Cooling the Tube and East London Line Extension, looked at replacing a reinforced concrete slip road wall adjacent to a dual carriage way, inspected blast damaged light industrial units adjacent to the Buncefield Oil Depot and surveyed deteriorating structures in Abu Dhabi and Georgia.
Each of these jobs gave me a good variation between site and office work and provided experience into many different aspects of civil engineering. This greatly assists with my route to Chartership with the Institute of Civil Engineers, which special services regards as extremely important.
In general, the company places a strong emphasis on Professional Excellence (promoting a learning culture amongst Mott MacDonald employees, sharing knowledge and promoting innovation). The depth of knowledge of our team means we are often providing advice to other areas of Mott MacDonald. The graduates are actively encouraged to participate, starting by giving a presentation to the whole team of their work to date.
The graduates of special services are also a social group and can be found at the main sports and social events and at their regular Friday lunches with the maritime division to celebrate the end of the week.
