Foundations and geotechnics

Foundations and geotechnics is an extremely fast growing sector of Mott MacDonald with a diverse array of projects and varied roles creating fantastic opportunities for graduates. Day-to-day tasks involve the core disciplines of engineering and geology. Work is undertaken both in the office and on site and can include the design of retaining structures, excavation slopes, pile foundations or drainage systems, together with the supervision of ground investigation or construction.
Training in a variety of specialised software as well as safety and design procedures is essential, and is carried out extremely efficiently allowing the quick development of graduates. Large projects often involve working closely with other of the company's sectors plus communicating with clients and contractors, providing a deeper understanding of commercial and construction issues.
Exciting projects we're currently involved with include ground investigation at the Karachaganak Processing Complex in Kazakhstan, Victoria Station Upgrade, and improvements to the A3 between London and Portsmouth. The latter includes the Hindhead tunnel which at 1.9km will be the longest non-estuarial tunnel in the UK. Structural design, environmental impact, drainage design and geomorphological mapping and slope stability risk assessment have all required specialist input from foundations and geotechnics.
