Building services

The job is varied and no two days are the same. There is plenty to learn and the industry is constantly changing, increasingly due to an emphasis on sustainability. This means the ability to think on your feet comes in handy.

I’ve been here for less than a year but feel I’ve had a wide variety of experience already. I think this variety is far more noticeable in building services than other disciplines and I’m usually working on two to three (or more) projects at any one time.

Generally, my day is divided between design work, site visits, meetings (with other engineers, architects, clients etc), correspondence, and the occasional seminar. Correspondence is a major part of the job so good communication skills are essential. Everybody is approachable and friendly, even those higher up the ladder. It makes for a good working atmosphere.

I’ve worked on several interesting projects in my time here. For example, I’ve been working on the Crossrail project, which is the major new train line set to run underground across London. I’ve been surprised by the responsibility handed to me already.

I’ve helped put together a bid for an international conference centre in Tanzania. A great thing about Mott MacDonald is that the work comes from all over the world. This means there is always potential to travel. I’m due to head out to Dubai for the three month graduate placement soon and can’t wait!

I also spent two weeks working at Wembley Stadium, which was a great experience. Comfortable shoes were very useful as it’s huge.

Recently, I’ve worked on a project to include a Theatre and Concert hall to a Music and Drama school in Cardiff. For this, a computer model was used to assess the projected internal environment and carbon footprint of the building. Sustainable energy solutions are becoming ever more important in building services engineering.

If you enjoy problem solving and are keen to travel, there are some great opportunities available.
