Bridges

Thomas Shrimpton
I've nearly finished my second year working for Bridges having started in September 2006 after graduating MEng Civil Engineering from the University of Birmingham.

I took this role because Mott MacDonald seamed to be a good place to start my career and I fancied moving to London. It has been an excellent decision for both these reasons.Work within the division varies greatly with lots of ongoing projects in various locations and size; from new bridge structures to inspection and assessments of existing bridges.

For those after professional advancement I can honestly say the rate at which I'm progressing towards chartership is entirely limited by me. If you write up your project reports, work out what courses you want to be put on and ask to be given different types of work to broaden your experience, then in my experience the managers have acted on this as fast as you could ever expect them to. In my interview I was told that graduates in Mott MacDonald can get chartered within four years and in my experience, so long as you spend the odd evening or weekend writing up your work and planning what you need to do next, then you get the support to easily be chartered in four years.
