Lerwick

I’m a graduate civil engineer in the buildings division in Lerwick, Shetland. Because our office is on the smaller side you get to know everyone and it’s like one big family! We are based just a couple of miles outside Lerwick, which is the main town in the Isles.
I’ve lived in Lerwick since graduating from Aberdeen University and have totally enjoyed the experience. There are various projects on-going at any given time. A few of us have worked on structural design, roads, sustainable urban drainage and landfill design. I feel I have gained a really well-rounded experience of civil engineering which I would have struggled to get in a bigger office and will hopefully stand me in good stead when I eventually decide to specialise.
Though Lerwick is off the mainland, it has great links to the rest of the UK. There are daily ferry services to Aberdeen and several daily flights to all the main cities in Scotland from where there are connections to all destinations you can think of. So if I do fancy the thrill of the big cities, it is no more than a couple of hours away over the weekend. On most weekends though, I prefer to go for long drives in the countryside where there are no traffic lights for miles and miles and the beauty of the islands is just unlike any you would see anywhere else. It is just bliss. The fitness facilities here are also second to none and have nothing to do with my woefully inadequate use of my gym membership. There’s just too much of other places to discover on the islands.
