My year in with Motts has been enjoyable, and has really enabled me to develop within my own area of interest, while gaining an appreciation of the wider world of civil engineering. Within the water department my focus has been on flood risk assessments and drainage designs. I was encouraged to develop flood modelling skills to enable expansion of the variety of work that can be completed by our department, and this has been very worthwhile on an individual, team and office level.

Mott MacDonald encourages each of its graduates to sign up to a Training Agreement associated with the relevant Institution (Institute of Civil Engineering or Institute Structural Engineers). This works towards a chartership which is encouraged on an office and company level. Training from within and outside of Motts is promoted, and can be tailored to your individual requirements, needs, or desires. I feel this has been a support to me and enabled me to gain a better understanding of my own career wishes.

With the nature of our work, there are a number of site visits to be completed and meetings to attend; you are therefore not completely ‘stuck’ in the office. There is also a very social side to the company. People respect deadlines must be kept, but they are not out to make the work boring. A number of out of office socials are arranged all year round including weekly football, basketball and rugby and Christmas parties. Members of the Cardiff office regularly take part in charity events the most recent being cycling to London, Breast Cancer marathon and Efod pub quiz. I believe Motts understand that people are more productive in their work if they are happy with their surroundings and are being encouraged to pursue what’s best for each individual.
